Craps Regression Strategies
A regression starts with bigger place bets and brings them down after the first hit, so part of the money goes back in your rack early. The best-known are $44 inside down to $22 and the 6 and 8 regression. Here's how each one works, what the hits pay, and a free table where you can practice them.

What is a regression?
You place your numbers at a bigger size than you mean to keep, and after the first hit (or a set number of hits) you lower them. Regressing doesn't change the house edge of any bet: each place bet keeps its own edge whatever its size. It changes how much is on the table, and when.
$44 inside, regress to $22
- Once a point is set, place $44 inside: $10 on the 5 and 9, $12 on the 6 and 8.
- On the first hit you're paid $14 (the 5 and 9 pay 7 to 5, the 6 and 8 pay 7 to 6).
- Regress to $22 inside: $5 on the 5 and 9, $6 on the 6 and 8. That takes $22 off the table.
- After that one hit, $36 has come back to your rack ($14 paid and $22 taken down) and $22 is still up.
- A seven-out ends it. Start again at $44 for the next shooter.

Try $44 inside, regress to $22
The 6 and 8 regression
- Once a point is set, place $30 each on the 6 and 8.
- On the first hit you're paid $35 (7 to 6).
- Regress to $12 each, taking $36 off the table.
- After that one hit, $71 has come back to your rack ($35 paid and $36 taken down) and $24 is still up.
- A seven-out ends it. Start again at $30 each for the next shooter.
Other regressions players use
- One hit and down. The general idea: any bigger opening bet, lowered after the first hit.
- Two steps down. $66 inside to $44 after the first hit, then to $22 after the second.
- Regress then press. Come down after the first hit, then press the numbers on later hits.
- Hit and run. Take the bets down after a set number of hits and wait for the next shooter.
The house edge of each bet
| Bet | Pays | House edge |
|---|---|---|
| Place 6 or 8 | 7 to 6 | 1.52% |
| Place 5 or 9 | 7 to 5 | 4.00% |
| Place 4 or 10 | 9 to 5 | 6.67% |

Questions
What is a regression in craps?
Placing your numbers at a bigger size and lowering them after the first hit, or after a set number of hits. Regressing changes how much is on the table and when, not the house edge of the bets.
How does $44 inside regress to $22 work?
Once a point is set, place $10 on the 5 and 9 and $12 on the 6 and 8. The first hit pays $14. Then lower the bets to $5 on the 5 and 9 and $6 on the 6 and 8, taking $22 off the table, so $36 is back in your rack and $22 is still up.
What is the 6 and 8 regression?
Place $30 each on the 6 and 8. The first hit pays $35; then lower both to $12, taking $36 off the table.
What does one hit and down mean in craps?
Starting with bigger place bets and lowering them after the first hit. $44 inside to $22 and the 6 and 8 regression are both one hit and down.
Does regressing change the house edge?
No. Each place bet keeps its own edge whatever its size: 1.52% on the 6 and 8, 4% on the 5 and 9, 6.67% on the 4 and 10.
