Place the 6 and 8: Craps Strategy
Placing the 6 and 8 means betting that each of those numbers rolls before a 7. They're the two point numbers that roll most often, five ways each out of 36. Here's how the bets work, what every roll pays, how players add a Pass Line, and a free table where you can practice it.

How placing the 6 and 8 works
- A place bet on the 6 or 8 pays 7 to 6. That's why it's bet in $6 steps: $6 pays a whole $7, $12 pays $14, $18 pays $21.
- It stays up when it wins. You're paid and the bet keeps working until a 7 or until you take it down.
- A 7 takes it. The 6 and 8 roll five ways each; the 7 rolls six ways.
- It's off on the come-out roll unless you turn it on. On our table that's the SET BETS ON button.
How to play it, step by step
- Wait for a point, since place bets don't play on the come-out roll unless you turn them on.
- Place the 6 and 8 in $6 steps: $6 each at a $5 table.
- Collect on a hit. The bet is paid and stays up.
- A 7 ends it. Both bets lose. Place them again once the next point is on.

Pass Line and the 6 and 8
A common way to play it with a line bet. Bet the Pass Line on the come-out and take the odds once the point is set. Then place the 6 and 8, skipping whichever one is the point, since the Pass Line already covers it. That gives three numbers working.
The house edge of each bet
| Bet | Pays | House edge |
|---|---|---|
| Place 6 or 8 | 7 to 6 | 1.52% |
| Big 6 or Big 8 | 1 to 1 | 9.09% |
| Pass Line | 1 to 1 | 1.41% |
| Odds | True odds | 0% |
Big 6 and Big 8 win on the same rolls as Place 6 and 8 but pay even money. Our crapless table doesn't have them. How we check the odds.
Variations
- Bigger units. $12, $18 or $30 each, always in $6 steps.
- Working on the come-out. Turn the bets on so they also play on the come-out roll (SET BETS ON on our table).
- 6 and 8 regression. Start bigger and come down after the first hit.
- Pressing. Put some of each win back on the number.
In crapless craps, and on a bubble machine
In crapless craps Place 6 and 8 pay the same 7 to 6 and keep the same 1.52%; the Pass Line keeps 5.38% there. Bubble craps machines have the place bets on their layout; check the paytable for what the machine pays on the 6 and 8.

Questions
How do you place the 6 and 8 in craps?
Once a point is set, put a place bet on the 6 and one on the 8, in $6 steps. Each pays 7 to 6 when its number rolls before a 7, and stays up after it wins. A 7 takes both.
Why do you bet $6 on the 6 and 8?
Place 6 and 8 pay 7 to 6, so a $6 bet pays exactly $7. A $5 bet would pay $5.83, which most tables round down, so players bet in $6 steps.
What does a place bet on the 6 or 8 pay?
7 to 6: $7 on $6, $14 on $12, $35 on $30. The bet stays on the number after it wins.
Are place bets working on the come-out roll?
Not unless you turn them on. Place bets are off on the come-out by default, so a come-out 7 doesn't take them. On our table, SET BETS ON keeps them working through the come-out.
What is the difference between Place 6 and Big 6?
Both win when a 6 rolls before a 7. Place 6 pays 7 to 6 and keeps 1.52%; Big 6 pays even money and keeps 9.09%.
